What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a treatment technique performed using a thin, single-use, single-insertion, sterile, “dry” (no medication), filiform needle. The needle is used to penetrate the skin into the underlying muscle tissue in order to effect a change in the body and to treat myofascial trigger points.
How Does Dry Needling Work?
Trigger points, often a component of myofascial pain syndrome, are irritable, hard “knots” within a muscle that may cause pain over a large area (A). Dry needling consists of a very thin needle being pushed through the skin to stimulate the trigger points, muscles, or connecting tissues (B). Dry needling may release the tight muscle bands and decrease pain (C).

Does Dry Needling Hurt?
A very thin needle is used during the treatment and most patients do not feel the needle puncture the skin. Once the needle is into the muscle, some patients will report a sensation similar to a muscle cramp. This sensation usually goes away quickly, but there may be some residual soreness and this typically does not last more than 24-48 hours.
What Conditions May Benefit from Dry Needling?
Dry needling may be beneficial for both acute and chronic pain conditions. Examples of conditions that may benefit from dry needling can include, but are not limited to:
- Acute and Chronic Neck / Back Pain
- Shoulder Pain / Rotator Cuff Injuries
- Tennis / Golfers Elbow
- Carpal Tunnel
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Sciatica
- Hip Pain / Bursitis
- Migraine and Tension-Type Headaches
- Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorders
- Knee Pain
- Shin Splints
- Hamstring Injuries
- Piriformis Syndrome
Dry Needling vs. Acupuncture:
Dry needling is not acupuncture. Acupuncture is founded on Traditional Chinese Medicine whereas dry needling is based on modern Western medicine anatomical and physiological principles. Dry needling is founded on scientific concepts.
What is Facial Cosmetic Dry Needling?
Facial cosmetic dry needling is a natural, non-invasive anti-aging treatment using thin, monofilament needles to stimulate collagen and elastin, facilitate muscle release and to reduce wrinkles, sagging and facial tension.
Facial cosmetic dry needling improves circulation and lymphatic drainage for a glowing, toned, and lifted face. Facial cosmetic dry needling offers a more natural, substance-free alternative to botulinum toxin and dermal fillers.
